What fits in a 20-yard dumpster?

A 20-yard dumpster holds about 7 to 10 pickup loads, which covers a full kitchen remodel, carpet from a whole house or a whole-house cleanout. Its 4-ft walls are still low enough to load by hand. That mix of room and easy loading is why it is the size most homeowners rent.

Typical fits for one 20-yard load:

  • A full kitchen gut: cabinets, counters, drywall and flooring (typical)
  • A whole-house decluttering or estate cleanout (typical)
  • Carpet and pad from an entire 3-bedroom house (typical)
  • A deck tear-down of about 300–400 sq ft (typical)

Can a full 20-yard dumpster go over 3 tons?

A 20-yard dumpster filled to the rim with mixed construction debris often goes over its 3-ton limit. The EPA factor for mixed C&D debris is 417 lb per cubic yard, so 20 full cubic yards weighs about 8,340 lb, or 4.17 tons. That is 1.17 tons over, which adds $87.75.

Household cleanout junk is much lighter than construction debris. A 20-yard of furniture, boxes and clothes rarely comes close to 3 tons. Drywall, tile and plaster are what push a remodel load over.

Is the 20-yard too small or too big for my job?

The 20-yard is too small when a cleanout tops about 10 pickup loads, or a remodel adds framing and drywall from several rooms; that is 30-yard territory. It is too big for a single bathroom. Concrete and dirt never go in a 20-yard, so heavy jobs drop to the 10 or 15-yard.

Size down to the 15-yard if the job is smaller. It includes 2.5 tons and has a 16 ft × 7.5 ft × 4.5 ft footprint.

Size up to the 30-yard if you expect more than about 10 pickup loads. It includes 4 tons.

What is on the final bill for a 20-yard?

The final bill for a 20-yard is your quoted price plus any weight over 3 tons at $75 per ton. Add $25 for each day past 7, and $50 for each mattress, tire or Freon appliance. The certified scale ticket comes attached, 3 to 5 business days after pickup.

20-yard dumpster rental questions

Is a 20-yard dumpster enough for a kitchen remodel?
A 20-yard dumpster fits most full kitchen remodels, including cabinets, countertops, drywall, flooring and old appliances. Watch the weight if you are removing tile floors or plaster walls, which are heavy.
Can I put shingles in a 20-yard dumpster?
Shingles can go in the 20-yard dumpster. A 20-yard holds a mid-size roof by volume, but shingles are heavy. Run the roof calculator with your bundle weight so you know the tons before you book.
Why can't concrete go in a 20-yard dumpster?
A 20-yard box of concrete would weigh far more than a roll-off truck can legally carry on Texas highways. That is why heavy debris is limited to the 10 and 15-yard dumpsters, loaded halfway.
How much driveway does a 20-yard dumpster need?
The 20-yard dumpster is 22 feet long and 8 feet wide. Plan on a straight, clear stretch about that long plus room for the truck to back in, typically about 60 feet total with roughly 23 feet of overhead clearance.
