A single-layer roof up to about 20 squares usually fits a 15-yard dumpster, and about 20 to 30 squares fits a 20-yard. A second layer doubles the weight. Shingle weight, not volume, usually decides the bill, so run your numbers in the calculator below before you book.
| Roof | Typical size | Included weight |
|---|---|---|
| Up to about 20 squares, 1 layer | 15-yard | 2.5 tons |
| About 20–30 squares, 1 layer | 20-yard | 3 tons |
| About 15 squares, 2 layers | 20-yard | 3 tons |
| 30+ squares, or 2 layers over 20 squares | 30-yard or a swap | 4 tons per box |
How much does a roof's worth of shingles weigh?
Shingles weigh squares × layers × bundles per square × pounds per bundle. If your shingles weigh 80 lb per bundle and a square takes 3 bundles, one square weighs 240 lb. A 25-square, one-layer roof is 6,000 lb, or 3 tons. Use your own bundle weight from the wrapper.
How it works: squares × layers × bundles per square × pounds per bundle = shingle weight. The 80 lb bundle is an example only. Read the weight on your own shingle wrapper or the manufacturer's spec sheet. Volume uses the EPA factor of 731 lb per loose cubic yard for composition roofing (EPA Volume-to-Weight Conversion Factors, 2016). Felt, nails, flashing and wet decking add weight.
The calculator picks a size that leaves room for felt, decking scraps and air gaps between shingles.
Where should the roofing dumpster go?
Put the roofing dumpster as close to the drip edge as the driveway allows, so the crew can toss shingles straight from the roof. Our drivers set boards under the rails to protect the driveway. Keep the box clear of power lines, which the truck needs about 23 ft of clearance from to tilt (typical).
Book by 3:00 PM and the box is there the next day between 7 AM and 5 PM. Same-day delivery is possible when a truck is open, for a $50 rush fee. The driver texts or calls 20 to 30 minutes before arriving.
Do I need a debris chute for roofing?
Federal rules require an enclosed chute when material is dropped more than 20 feet to any point outside the building's exterior walls (OSHA 29 CFR 1926.252(a)). Most one-story Killeen homes are lower than that, so crews toss shingles straight in. Higher drops need a chute or another safe method.
This is the federal rule for construction work, not legal advice. Your roofing contractor is responsible for the crew's fall-protection and debris-drop plan.
What if the roof fills the dumpster before the crew is done?
If the roofing dumpster fills before the tear-off is finished, call for a swap. We pull the full box and drop an empty one; a swap is billed as a new standard rental. For big or two-layer roofs, booking the swap up front keeps the crew moving.
