Putting a Dumpster on Your Driveway or Street

Most dumpsters go on the driveway, set on wood boards so the steel never touches your concrete. Here is how much room the box and truck need, and when the street needs a permit.

How much space does a dumpster need?

A dumpster needs a flat spot as long and wide as the box, plus room for the truck. Our 20, 30 and 40-yard boxes are 22 ft long and 7.5 to 8 ft wide. The roll-off truck typically needs about 60 ft of straight approach and about 23 ft of overhead clearance to tilt and slide the box off.

20-yard22 ft × 8 ft4 ft

Approach and clearance figures are typical for roll-off trucks. Tell us about tight turns, slopes or gates when you book.

Will a dumpster damage my driveway?

A Knox Bros dumpster sits on wood boards, not bare steel, so it does not scratch or crack a sound concrete or asphalt driveway. Our drivers place structural boards under the rails and rollers on every driveway drop. The boards spread the weight and keep steel off the surface.

  • Keep heavy debris spread across the floor of the box, not piled at one end.
  • Avoid placing it on concrete poured in the last few weeks.
  • Keep it off septic lids, water meters and sprinkler heads.

Can a dumpster go on the street?

A dumpster can go on the street only where the city allows it, and many Central Texas cities require a right-of-way or street-use permit first. Belton lists a $100 street use license, Gatesville a $100 right-of-way permit, and Georgetown requires a right-of-way permit for containers stored at the curb.

Rules differ by city and change, so confirm with the city before the delivery date. In Killeen, ask the City of Killeen before placing a dumpster in the street. A driveway avoids the permit question entirely, and our drivers protect it with wood boards.

What if the truck can't place the dumpster?

If the driver arrives and can't drop or pick up the dumpster, a $125 dry-run fee applies. The usual causes are parked cars in the spot, low-hanging wires or branches, and locked gates. The driver texts or calls 20 to 30 minutes ahead, so you have time to clear the way.

HOAs can limit how long a dumpster may sit in a driveway. Check your HOA rules before delivery.

Placement questions

Can a dumpster go on grass?
A dumpster can go on firm, dry grass, but it will leave marks, and soft or wet ground can trap the truck. A driveway or gravel pad is better, especially for heavy debris.
Do I need to be home for the dumpster delivery?
You do not need to be home if the spot is clear and marked. The driver texts or calls 20 to 30 minutes ahead to confirm placement.
Can the dumpster go in my backyard?
Backyard placement only works with a wide gate, firm ground and clear overhead space for the truck. Most backyards can't take a roll-off. Describe the spot when you call.
Will the dumpster block my garage?
On most driveways a dumpster blocks the garage while it's there. Move the vehicles you need before delivery day.
