30-Yard Dumpster Rental

The 30-yard roll-off is the big box most contractors pick. It is built for construction sites, home additions and big tear-outs where the volume is large and the debris is mostly wood, drywall and packaging.

What fits in a 30-yard dumpster?

A 30-yard dumpster holds about 10 to 15 pickup loads of bulky debris: framing, drywall and packaging from an addition, or the contents of a large house. The 6-ft walls hold more but are harder to load by hand, so crews usually walk debris in through the rear door.

Typical fits for one 30-yard load:

  • Framing, drywall and packaging from a home addition (typical)
  • A new-build or large remodel on an active site (typical)
  • A whole-house cleanout with furniture and appliances (typical)
  • A large multi-layer roof where volume, not weight, is the problem (check the roof calculator)

How heavy can a 30-yard dumpster get?

A 30-yard dumpster filled to the rim with mixed construction debris weighs about 6.26 tons, using the EPA factor of 417 lb per cubic yard. That is 2.26 tons over the 4 tons included, which adds $169.50. Light, bulky loads like framing scraps and packaging stay well under.

The 6-ft walls make the 30-yard harder to load by hand. Throw heavy pieces in first, then stack light debris on top, and keep everything level with the rim.

Is the 30-yard too small or too big for my job?

The 30-yard is too small for a new build or major demolition with more than about 15 pickup loads; step up to the 40-yard or plan swaps. It is too big when the debris is heavy, because a full 30-yard of mixed debris already runs past its 4 included tons.

Size down to the 20-yard if the job is smaller. It includes 3 tons and has a 22 ft × 8 ft × 4 ft footprint.

Size up to the 40-yard if you expect more than about 15 pickup loads. It holds 5–6 tons.

What is on the final bill for a 30-yard?

The final bill for a 30-yard is your quoted price plus any weight over 4 tons at $75 per ton. Add $25 for each day past 7, and $50 for each mattress, tire or Freon appliance. The certified scale ticket comes attached, 3 to 5 business days after pickup.

30-yard dumpster rental questions

When do I need a 30-yard instead of a 20-yard?
Pick the 30-yard dumpster when the debris is bulky and light, like framing, packaging and furniture, and there is more than about 10 pickup loads of it. If the debris is heavy, two smaller loads usually cost less than paying overage on one big box.
Can a 30-yard dumpster fit in a driveway?
The 30-yard dumpster has the same 22 × 8 ft footprint as the 20-yard. Its walls are 6 feet high instead of 4. If your driveway takes a 20-yard, it can usually take the 30-yard.
Can I put roofing shingles in a 30-yard?
Shingles can go in the 30-yard dumpster, but a full 30-yard of shingles would be far over the 4 included tons. Use it for very large roofs only after running the roof calculator, or swap smaller boxes.
Do you offer a 40-yard dumpster?
Knox Bros also rents a 40-yard roll-off: 22 × 7.5 × 8 ft, holding 5 to 6 tons, about 12 to 16 pickup loads. It suits major demolition and new construction. For heavy debris, a smaller box costs less in overage.
