Most construction sites run a 30 or 40-yard dumpster for framing scraps, drywall and packaging, and a 20-yard for smaller remodels and additions. Concrete, block and dirt go in a separate 10 or 15-yard box, loaded halfway. Splitting heavy and light debris keeps both under their included tons.
| Debris | Best size | Included weight |
|---|---|---|
| Major demolition, new construction | 40-yard | Holds 5–6 tons |
| Framing, packaging, drywall | 30-yard | 4 tons |
| Remodel or small addition | 20-yard | 3 tons |
| Concrete, block, dirt | 10 or 15-yard, half full | 2 or 2.5 tons |
How do dumpster swaps work on a job site?
A swap means our driver pulls your full dumpster and drops an empty one in the same trip. Each swap is billed as a new standard rental with its own 7 days and included tons. Call before the box is over the rim, so it can legally go on the road.
Because we run our own trucks, the person who answers (254) 254-5880 is on the same team as the driver making the swap. No dispatch is passed to a third party.
What rules apply to construction debris?
Three federal rules come up most on Central Texas job sites. Material dropped more than 20 feet outside the walls needs an enclosed chute (OSHA 29 CFR 1926.252(a)). Demolition and renovation need an asbestos inspection, and notice above set amounts (EPA asbestos NESHAP, 40 CFR 61.145). Paid work in pre-1978 homes follows lead-safe practices (EPA Renovation, Repair and Painting Rule (40 CFR 745)).
Asbestos-containing material cannot go in a Knox Bros dumpster. These are summaries of federal rules, not legal advice. Confirm local requirements with the city's building office.
Where should the dumpster sit on an active site?
Place the construction dumpster on firm, level ground with a straight approach for the truck, typically about 60 ft long with about 23 ft of overhead clearance. Keep it away from fresh slabs, trenches and soft fill. A $125 dry-run fee applies if materials or vehicles block it at pickup.
